PURPOSE:To permit the regulation of a proper profile to be effected automatically, by a method wherein an effective reference band and an effective pattern band are set in bands in the direction of the reciprocal movement of a thickness meter from the central points of respective bands to a change area. CONSTITUTION:An original data, measured by a thickness meter, changes at a boundary between a reference band and a pattern band. When the center of a measuring spot S comes to the position of a point 1 upon advancing of the measuring head of the thickness meter from the reference band Ai+1 into a pattern band Bi of a plastic sheet, a change appears in a measuring signal. When the head is advanced to a point 2, the measuring spot S is surrounded perfectly by the pattern band Bi, however, there is a delay in the response of the head, and a real value is shown when the head has arrived at a position of point 3. Accordingly, the thickness of an effective pattern band with respect to the pattern band Bi is shown from the point 3 to a point 1'. However, when the center of the measuring spot S arrives at the point 1', the right end of the same enters into the reference band Ai, then, arrives at a point 3'. Accordingly, the thickness of the effective reference band with respect to the reference band Ai is shown from the point 3' to the next point 1.
