Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a high contrast and good display quality by using a ferroelectric liquid crystal, the moleculars in the smectic A(SmA) phase of which have a pretilt angle and incline in one direction with respect to a substrate plane. CONSTITUTION:The arrangement of the liquid crystal molecules depends on the orientation state at the boundary face between the liquid crystal 15 and the substrate 11. The degree of angle of inclination of the optical axis of the liquid crystal molecules with the cell surface varies with the magnitude of the pretilt angle thetapr in the SmA phase of the liquid crystal. The two different states of the region of the high contrast and the region of the low contrast can be formed by the inclination of the layer or the difference in the bend state of the layer in the case of making phase transition from the SmA phase to SmC* phase. The molecules in the SmA phase are inclined in one direction by using, for example, an oriented film 4 subjected to a rubbing treatment. The liquid crystal layer where the region of the high contrast governs is thereby obtd. because of the directivity originating in the inclination direction of the cell surface and the liquid crystal 15mol. as the molecules part from the phase change point of SmA-SmC*.
