Abstract

PURPOSE:To shorten a picture retrieving time and to prevent the deterioration of a final picture quality by initially schematically retrieving the picture and then retrieving the picture in detail so as to supplement it. CONSTITUTION:Initially, a code converting means 600 for converting natural picture data to schematic picture code data and detail picture code data is operated by an operation control means 700 to execute a code conversion and store the respective code data in a picture code data memory means 100. Then, a desired one of schematic picture code data groups is selected, outputted to a picture memory means 200 from the means 100, converted to a corresponding color code through a color converting means 400 and displayed on a display means 500. From the contents of this display, whether it is the desired picture to be retrieved or not is recognized. At the time of the desired picture, the detail picture code data corresponding to the schematic picture data is taken out from the means 100 to a picture memory means 210 and applied to the means 400 through a selecting means 300. Thereby, the detail data is impressed in place of invalid data at the time of retrieving and combined with previously impressed effective data and displayed.
