Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a composition which has high flame retardancy and does not generate any noxious gas during burning by mixing a polyolefin with an inorganic metal hydroxide and red phosphorus surface-treated with an ultraviolet-curable acrylate. CONSTITUTION:An electrical-insulating composition comprises 100pts.wt. polyolefin, 50-500pts.wt. inorganic metal hydroxide and at least 0.5pt.wt. red phosphorus surface-treated with an ultraviolet-curable acrylate. Said acrylate means acrylic acid or acrylic ester having an unsaturated bond in the molecule. This acrylate is adsorbed by red phosphorus and is cured by irradiation with ultraviolet rays. By this surface treatment, the water absorptivity and hygroscopicity of red phosphorus can be greatly decreased. When the amount of said surface-treated red phosphorus added is below 0.5pt.wt., the aimed carbonization effect cannot be attained.
