Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce the title resin solution which is excellent in storage stability, workability and thermosetting properties, and suitable as molding material and laminating material and gives a molded product and the like excellent in heat resistance, flame retardance, mechanical strength and electric properties, by dissolving a thermosetting phenolic resin having specific properties in an organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:Phenol and/or a phenol derivative such as m-cresol is added to a hydrochloric acid/HCHO bath having a hydrochloric acid concentration of 5-28wt.%, and an HCHO concentration of 8-25wt.% with the total concentration of the hydrochloric acid and the HCHO being 15-40wt.% so that the bath ratio of the weight of the bath to that to phenols may be 8 or more and they are brought into contact with each other at 45 deg.C or below to produce a thermosetting phenolic resin having a weight-average molecular weight of 1,000 or more (measured bY G.P.C.) in terms of PS, a free phenol content of 500ppm or below and containing as main linkage units trifunctional residues of methylene, methylol and phenols. The obtained resin is dissolved in a polar organic solvent such as alcohols, esters, ketons or amides so that the concentration may be 5-80wt.%.
