Abstract

PURPOSE:To secure a cell excellent in safety and less in self-discharge by using an hydrogen absorption alloy with a specified composition. CONSTITUTION:A metallic oxide-hydrogen cell is provided with a negative electrode composed of a positive electrode, an alkaline electrolyte and a hydrogen absorption alloy which are the main ingredients. This hydrogen absorption alloy has the composition of a formula I, where M is rare earth metal, and the quantity of Ni, Co, Mn, Fe, Al other than the rare earth metal is expressed at atomic percentage to a 1 gram atom of M each with x, y, z, v and w, and each of them contains numerical value in the range of a formula II. In the hydrogen absorption alloy like this, a good characteristic in regard to sufficient hydrogen absorption quantity, a low balanced platear pressure and chemical stability in an electrolyte is securable, so that the cell composed of this alloy as a negative material is large in capacity and long in service life and, what is more, it comes to such one that is excellent in safety and less in self- discharge.
