PURPOSE:To ensure that the cohesive strength of an ink layer of a thermal transfer recording material is higher at a central part of a heat generating element and lower at end parts and achieve printing of clear images on a rough paper, by composing the recording material of an ink layer and a base layer, and incorporating thermoplastic resin particles and a coloring material into a low melting point substance in the ink layer. CONSTITUTION:A low melting point substance may be a conventionally known wax, fatty acid, fatty acid derivative or the like, whereas a thermoplastic resin may be a polyethylene resin, EVA, EEA, an acrylic resin, a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate resin or the like. A coloring material may be a pigment or a dye, and a base layer may be a film of a conventionally known synthetic resin such as PETP. A recording paper 5 is superposed on the surface of the thermally transferable ink layer 2 provided on the base film 1 of the thermal transfer recording material 4, and in the condition where pressure is applied thereto by a platen roll 6 and a thermal head 7, heat pulses are applied to the recording material 4 by the head 7, whereby the ink layer 2 is selectively transferred onto the paper 5 to form a printed image 8.
