Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently produce ethanol useful for industry, beverages, fuels, etc., by culturing Clostridium thermocellum I-1-B in a medium containing cellulose, cellobiose, etc. CONSTITUTION:Clostridium thermocellum I-1-B (FERM No.9510) is a gram negative bacillus and thermophilic anaerobic bacterium and has the properties of having no mobility, being negative to catalase, producing a yellow dyestuff, being nonfermentable at OF test, being positive to VP reaction, enabling to utilize pectin or the like as well as cellulose, cellobiose, glucose and fructose and other properties. Said I-1-B bacterium is anaerobically cultured in a medium containing up to 100g/l of cellulose, cellobiose or the like and 6-30g/l of a yeast extract or the like at a pH of 6.5-7.5 and a temperature of 57-63 deg.C for 3-5 days to produce ethanol.
