Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain high contrast and small fluctuations of the contrast and enable application which is stable for a long period by setting pulse width and a crest value so that the vibration of the transmitted light quantity of ferroelectric liquid crystal is suppressed and stabilized by pulse application in nonselection mode when the long-short pulse width ratio is set to >=(2:1). CONSTITUTION:Frequencies (pulse width) in selectionm mode and non-selection mode need to be different and a waveform group for matrix driving of high frequency needs to be generated in the latter mode so as to attain restraint stabilization at a parallel position 102 or 103 of the dielectric anisotropy of liquid crystal molecules. Namely, the pulse with in writing mode should be in a pulse response area 201 and further in a range 202 covering an intermediate area and an effective value response area, preferably, in an effective value response area 203. Then an excellent result is obtained when the pulse width is made as short as possible and a voltage is set above a threshold value of effective value response. Consequently, an image with high contrast is displayed stably for a long period.
