Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber with low core eccentricity by providing a device for measuring the whirling quantity of a starting material below a fine glass particle deposition position and in the vicinity of the deposition point, and offsetting the claw part of the rotary chuck by an XY stage in the horizontal plane from the center of a rotating shaft to decrease the measure value to zero. CONSTITUTION:The starting material to form the optical fiber center part is vertically held by the rotary chuck 2, and the fine particles of a glass material formed by the flame hydrolysis are deposited on the outer periphery of the starting material. In this case, the swirling quantity of the part of the starting material immediately before deposition is successively measured by the measuring device 11 arranged in the vicinity of the deposition point below the position to be deposited with the fine particles. The measured value is inputted to a controller 14, the claw part of the rotary chuck 2 is offset by the XY stage 12 in the horizontal plane from the center of the rotating shaft to decrease the swirling quantity to zero, and the swirling of the part of the starting material immediately before deposition is suppressed.
