Abstract
PURPOSE:To form a PTFE porous covering layer on a core wire without interposing anyintermediate layer by covering core wire with paste, and by making the covering layer porous by means of stretching. CONSTITUTION:Paste is extruded on a core wire to provide covering thereon. This paste is admixture consisting of unbaked PTFE powder and a liquid lubricant. This liquid lubricant moistens the surface of PTFE and is removable at a lower temp. than the melting point of PTFE by means of evaporation, extraction, etc. Examples are fluid paraffin, naphtha, etc. Usual mix proportion is 5-50 parts by weight liquid lubricant to 100 parts by weight PTFE powder, together with any necessary additives in appropriate amount. The liquid lubricant is removed from the covering layer preferably by evaporation method. Then the core wire and PTFE covering layer are stretched at 100-330 deg.C, and the dia. of core wire is reduced in accordance with the stretching magnification, and the PTFE layer is made porous. Preferably the stretching process is followed by heating and baking at a temp. over the melting point of PTFE for enhancement of the mechanical strength.
