Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide an apparatus composed of a formulation tank, a slurry-feeding apparatus, a cooker, a reactor, a product storage tank and a controlling apparatus and effective in continuously producing cationized starch useful as a paper strengthening agent for paper-making industry at desired cationization degree and concentration. CONSTITUTION:A starch slurry 1, an epoxide-containing quaternary ammonium salt 2 and an alkaline liquid are supplied to a formulation tank 4 to produce a formulated slurry. The slurry is continuously introduced with a slurry-supplying apparatus 5 to a cooker 6 and made to directly contact with steam to obtain gelatinized starch. The gelatinized starch is made to react with the above epoxide-containing quaternary ammonium salt in a reactor 8, the obtained cationized starch is supplied, dispersed and diluted with dilution water in a mixer 9 and the product is sent to a product- storage tank 11. The temperature of the reactor is controlled by controlling the amount of steam supplied to the cooker. When the liquid level in the storage tank reaches a prescribed level, a water-supplying apparatus 15 is energized, the supply of slurry is switched to water supply to wash off starch liquid in the facility and the liquid is discharged from a waste water discharge line 16. The adhesion of paste can be prevented by this process.
