Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain whisker reinforced composite ceramics having superior bending strength and further toughness by mixing ceramics with whiskers having specified shapes and by calcining the mixture. CONSTITUTION:SiC, Si3N4 or Al2O3 whiskers are added to ceramics such as glass having various compsns. or crystallized glass as a matrix preferably by 10-60vol.%. The aspect ratio of the whiskers is 3-300, and at the time when the whiskers are accumulated in the order or increasing aspect ratio until the accumulation weight reaches 50%, the aspect ratio is within the range of 50-150. The diameter of the whiskers is <=2mum, and at the time when the whiskers are accumulated in the order of increasing diameter until the accumulation weight reaches 50%, the diameter is within the range of 0.1-0.6mum. They are mixed, calcined and integrated by heating under pressure for about 1hr. The heating temp. may be about 1,000 deg.C and the pressure may be about 350kg/cm<2>.
