Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform proper shift operation without entailing a large shift shock by varying working hydraulic pressure to be fed to a frictional engaging element according to the generated torque of a turbine runner. CONSTITUTION:Generated torque out of a turbine runner of a torque converter is calculated by a calculating device on the basis of engine speed and revolution speed of the turbine runner to be detected by both first and second speed detecting devices. According to this calculation, a control characteristic altering device alters a control characteristic in working hydraulic pressure supply to a frictional engaging device or a clutch brake of a shift mechanism through a hydraulic control device. With this constitution, smooth shift operation is performed without entailing a large shift shock, while working hydraulic pressure for holding a frictional engaging element in a state after the engaging state is selected can be set to the irreducible minimum. Therefore driving load on an oil pump is also reduced, thus improvement in fuel consumption is well promotable.
