Abstract
PURPOSE:To uniformly impregnate fibers with thermoplastic synthetic resin and consequently obtain fiber reinforced formed material with no defect in internal structure by a method wherein the thermoplastic synthetic resin covering layer, which is provided on the outer periphery of a bundle of single fibers so as to form a covered fiber bundle, is softened in order to impregnate fibers with thermoplastic synthetic resin melt and finally the resultant resin- impregnated fiber bundle is drawn through a die. CONSTITUTION:The number of single fiber, which mainly consists of carbon fiber or the like and is bound into a fiber bundle, is 1,000 or more. As thermoplastic synthetic resin to cover the outer periphery of the fiber bundle, resin, which is normally used for forming, such as polyethylene or the like is used. A plurality of the covered bundles 3 are braided in combination with one another. The covered fiber bundle preferably has flexibility and accordingly the thermoplastic synthetic resin for covering preferably has flexibility at normal temperature. A plurality of the braided materials 4 of the covered bundles are bound into a bundle and heated up to the softening point of the covered thermoplastic synthetic resin or higher and at the same time impregnated with thermoplastic synthetic resin melt and finally drawn through a die 9 for forming.
