Abstract

PURPOSE:To decrease the number of connections and drivers and to enable displaying of moving pictures and medium contrasts by combining band-shaped electrodes and an electrode which is uniform over the entire surface. CONSTITUTION:An optical modulating element 100 consists of a liquid crystal cell formed by disposing a glass substrate 5 having the plural band-shaped electrodes 2 imparted with electric field gradients in the longitudinal direction and a glass substrate 2 having the common electrode 11 uniform over the entire surface to face each other and sealing a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) therein and a set of polarizing plates 6a and 6b sandwiching this liquid crystal cell 1. The gradiants of the threshold voltage are formed longitudinally by the voltage drop generated by the current flowing in the resistance films. The region where the inversion of the liquid crystal molecules of the FLC 10 arises changes analogously in proportion to the impulsive voltage impressed to the cell when said voltage is impressed thereto from the end of the band-shaped electrodes 12 having the gradients of the threshold voltage. The flat panel display of full colors capable of displaying the medium contrasts and moving pictures is thereby obtd.
