Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled novel resin free from yellowing and reduction in the concentration on color development, stable in color-developed image, outstanding in water resistance, by reaction of benzyl compound(s) with salicylic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst followed by reaction of a styrene derivative with the resulting co-condensation resin. CONSTITUTION:First, a reaction is carried out, in the presence of an acid catalyst, between (A) salicylic acid and (B) benzyl alcohol of formula I (R1 and R2 are each H, aryl, etc.; R3 and R7 are each H or 1-4C alkyl), benzyl ether and/or dibenzyl ether of formula II. Thence, the resultant co-condensation resin is made to react with a styrene derivative of formula III (R4 and R5 are H or methyl; R6 is the same as R3), thus obtaining the objective resin with a weight-average molecular weight g 500-10,000. This resin is constituted of 5-35mol.% of unit of formula IV, 10-85mol.% of unit of formula V or VI and 4-85mol.% of unit of formula VII or VIII with the unit IV bonded to the unit V through alpha-carbon, the unit V to the benzene ring of the unit V through alpha-carbon, and the unit VII to the benzene ring of the unit V through alpha-carbon.
