PURPOSE:To easily form a small-diameter and long-sized optical fiber contg. tube by constituting the outermost layer of the optical fiber of a water absorptive swelling layer formed by incorporating a high-polymer water absorbent into a soft or porous base material. CONSTITUTION:The secondary coating 6 of the optical fiber 3 is constituted of the water absorptive swelling layer formed by incorporating the high-polymer water absorbent into the soft or porous base material. The soft base material is urethane, etc., and a cotton cloth, etc., are used for the porous base material. Crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol, etc., are used as the high-polymer water absorbent. There is no need for putting the powdery high-polymer water absorbent which is heretofore used into the spacing between such optical fiber 3 and the tube and a gap is formed around the fiber 3. The optical fiber 3 is, therefore, easily inserted even into the small-diameter and long-sized tube and no excessive stresses are exerted to the fiber even if the tube is deformed. The optical fiber contg. tube having the excellent performance is thus obtd.
