Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the activity of the support with stability improved, by admixing cell bodies of a microorganism or an enzyme with an aqueous polyvinyl alcohol of a specific concentration, and allowing the mixture to come into contact with an aqueous sulfate of a specific concentration to effect solidification. CONSTITUTION:Cell bodies of a microorganism or an enzyme is mixed with 1-30% aqueous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution, then the mixture is solidified by bringing it into contact with 15% or higher aqueous sulfate solution to give a microorganism-immobilized support. In another method, the solidified product may be brought into contact with a boric acid-containing solution. In an embodiment, a mixture of cell bodies with aqueous PVA is extruded out through nozzles of a desired cross section and brought into contact with an aqueous sulfate simultaneously to effect solidification. The process enables inexpensive mass production of microorganism-immobilized support.
