PURPOSE:To achieve high-quality printing through using a multi-strike ribbon, by pressing a thermal head comprising a partial protrusion glaze around each heat generating element against a flat platen in which a rubber plate having a specified hardness and a specified thickness is adhered to a base, with a pressure in a specified range. CONSTITUTION:A thermal head 15 has a main part comprising a partial glaze 40 surrounding heat generating elements 42 on a ceramic substrate 43. The partial glaze 40 comprises a partial protrusion glaze 41 surrounding the heat generating elements at a height of 20-30mum from the surface of the substrate 43. A flat platen 18 comprises an aluminum base to which a flat rubber plate having a rubber hardness of HsA 20-50 deg. and a thickness of 0.6-1.0mm is adhered through vulcanization. When a transfer recording paper 14 is pressed against the flat platen 18 by the thermal head 15, the surface of the rubber plate is only locally deformed to a depth of 20-30mum, and a surface pressure is generated concentratedly beneath the partial protrusion glaze 41. Therefore, when a multi-strike ribbon 16 is heated, only an ink beneath the heat generating elements 42 is melted, and is transferred onto the paper 14.
