Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable areal modulation to be applied on a pixel basis, by providing minute recesses and projections over the entire area on the opposite side of a base sheet with respect to the side coated with a heat-fusible ink, in a thermal transfer recording ink sheet. CONSTITUTION:An ink sheet base 3 is provided with minute recesses and projections on the side opposite to the side coated with a heat-fusible ink 4. For example, the recesses or projections are provided to have a diameter of 1/4 times the length of one side of heat generating elements of a thermal head and a pitch of 1/4 times the length of one side of the heat generating elements. The property for close adhesion between the thermal head 1 and the ink sheet base 3 is not high in recessed areas of the surface of the base 3, so that the pressure with which the head 1 and the base 3 are pressed against each other is low in the areas. Therefore, in the recessed areas of the surface of a platen roller 7, heat is poorly transmitted from the head 1 to the ink sheet base 3, so that sufficient transfer is not achieved when the quantity of heat generated by the heat generating element 8 is small. When the quantity of heat generated by the element 8 is large, sufficient transfer is achieved even in the recessed areas of the surface of the ink sheet base 3.
