Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the title polyester excellent in heat resistance, solvent resistance moldability and mechanical properties, by reacting a dihydric phenol with an alkali metal salt in an organic solvent, removing the formed water from the reaction system, adding a specified ester compound to the reaction mixture and polymerizing it. CONSTITUTION:A dihydric phenol (A) of formula I (wherein Ar<1> is an aromatic ring, R<1> is a 1-20C alkyl or alkoxyl, a 2-20C acyl or a 7-20C aralkyl, and a is 0-4) is reacted with an alkali metal salt in an organic polar solvent such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, and the formed water is removed by azeotropic distillation with an azeotrope-forming solvent such as benzene. The reaction product completely freed of water is mixed with an ester compound (B) of formula II (wherein Ar<2-4> are each Ar<1>, R<2-4> are each R<1>, b-d are each a, and X and Y are each a nucleophilic substituent such as a halogen or nitro) in an A to B ratio of 1/1-1.05, and the resulting mixture is polymerized at 100-400 deg.C for 0.5-24hr to obtain the title polymer comprising approximately equimolar amounts of repeating units of formulas III and IV and having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.02-10 in an N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone/LiCl (weight ratio of 95/5) solvent in a concentration of 0.1g/dl at 140 deg.C.
