Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the durability, magnetic characteristics and electromagnetic conversion characteristics of a magnetic recording medium by using a specific copolymer as a binder for constituting a magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:The vinylidene chloride copolymer having a -COOM group (where M denotes hydrogen or alkali metal) and quaternary ammonium salt in the molecule are incorporated into the binder. The affinity to magnetic powder is improved and even the magnetic powder formed to superfine particles and the magnetic powder having a large quantity of magnetization are satisfactorily dispersed by using the vinylidene chloride copolymer having the -COOM group which is a polar group and the quaternary ammonium salt in the molecule as the binder. The durability and surface characteristic of the magnetic recording medium are thereby improved and the recording medium having the excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics is obtd.
