PURPOSE:To properly decide whether radiation field candidate areas are right or wrong by deciding such that the candidate areas possessing separation degrees higher than a threshold are right and the candidate areas possessing separation degrees lower than said threshold are wrong. CONSTITUTION:As for radiation field candidate areas 12a, 12b and 12c, their separation degrees are calculated which are used in decision analysis regarding pre-reading picture signals in the radiation field candidate areas on a sheet 10 and those outside said candidate areas. After the separation degrees etaa, etab and etac of the candidate areas 12a, 12b and 12c are obtained, the candidate areas possessing their separation degrees eta higher than the prescribed threshold Th are decided right, whereas the candidate areas possessing degrees lower than the threshold Th are decided wrong. Thus whether the radiation field candidate areas are right or wrong can be decided properly.
