Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently and certainly destruct or emulsify a calculus or tissue by making it possible to vibrate a vibration transmitting member not only in the before- and-behind directions along the axial direction thereof but also in other direction, by nonuniformly arranging electrodes for applying voltage to the end surface of a piezoelectric element with respect to the end surface of said element. CONSTITUTION:The electrode 3 of an ultrasonic vibrator 1 is divided into a plurality of electrode pieces 3a-3d which are, in turn, nonuniformly arranged to the end surface of a piezoelectric element 2. Therefore, the outputs of the first-fourth amplifiers 11a-11d are regulated to set the voltages applied to the electrode pieces 3a-3d to different magnitudes. Whereupon, the vibration direction of the ultrasonic vibration generated in the piezoelectric element 2 does not become uniform vibration only in the axial direction (before-and-behind directions) and the vibration in the direction inclined with respect to the axial direction is also generated.
