Abstract

PURPOSE:To automate the inspection of tools by measuring the three dimensional contour on the basis of required planar dimensions at respective spots and the displacement of a photographing system for focusing to obtain the wear amount of a tool while detecting abnormal tools from a concentration difference between the whole two-dimensional pictures. CONSTITUTION:A picture sensor (CCD camera) 1 disposed above a turnout of a XY movable table 2 for a threading machine or the like is focused to the edge of a cutting tool through a drive mechanism 5 by an automatic focus calculating device 3 to send a concentration picture to a measuring device 6. The picture is binary coded so that the measuring value is calculated while a three-dimensional contour is measured with the measuring value and a signal from an encoder 8 to obtain a wear amount of the tool. Also, the execution signal from said device 3 is sent also to a picture composing device 7 through the measuring device 6 to detect abnormalities in the tool from the concentration difference between the whole two-dimensional pictures according to a scanning line set by a contour judging device 4. Thus, any change in the apparent contour of cutting tool can be highly accurately, automatically detected by the picture processing.
