Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a raw material for pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, etc., from an easily available raw material under mild condition in high yield, by carrying out reductive decomposition of a methylaniline derivative with hydrogen in the presence of a metal catalyst of the group 8 of the periodic table. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula A-CH3 (A is aminophenyl which may be substituted with alkyl, cycloalkyl or alkoxy at the nucleus) can be produced by reacting a compound of formula A-CH2-B (B is substituted amino) with hydrogen as a reducing agent at 10-100 deg.C, preferably 20-50 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst at least containing one or more kinds of metals of the group 8 of the periodic table (e.g. Pd or Ru). The catalyst is preferably an easily available palladium catalyst supported on carbon and the amount of the metallic component is 0.0001-0.5mol. per 1mol. of the compound of formula A-CH2-B.
