Abstract

PURPOSE:To facilitate the formation of the title polyester of a desired viscosity, by adding a specified shortstop to the reaction mixture during the reaction of a polyester having a COOH group on one end with a compound having epoxy groups on both ends. CONSTITUTION:A diol is polycondensed with a dicarboxylic acid by esterification to obtain a polyester (A) having a COOH group on one end, a number-average MW of 500-20,000 and an acid number of 0.1-4.0(meq/g). Separately, a 2-30C aliphatic or aromatic diol or a polyalkylene glycol and epichlorohydrin are condensed to obtain a compound (B) having epoxy groups on both ends (B). Component A is reacted with 0.5-1.5mol., per mol. of component A, of component B at 100-250 deg.C in a nitrogen stream in the presence of a catalyst, and 0.04-0.4mol., per mol. of component A, of an acid of an acid dissociation constant (at 25 deg.C) <=4.0 (e.g., glycolic acid) as a shortstop (C) is added to the reaction system when the desired viscosity is reached (e.g., 0.4-10etasp/c). The resulting mixture is further reacted for 0.2-2hr.
