Abstract

PURPOSE:To industrially advantageously prepare a polymer having a narrow MW distribution even at room temp. or higher, by polymerizing styrene in the presence of an initiator consisting of HI and a specified metal halide compd. CONSTITUTION:Styrene of the formula as shown (where R<1> is a monovalent org. group; n is 0-5) (most pref., p-methoxystyrene or p-methylstyrene) is polymerized in the presence of HI and a metal halide compd. MX2 (where M is a divalent metal ion; X is a halogen) (most pref., ZnI2). This polymn. reaction may be carried out in a bulk system, but is normally carried out in a solvent such as cyclohexane, toluene or methylene chloride. By the above-mentioned method, a polymer having a narrow MW distribution at higher temp. than before, i.e., between room temp. and 80 deg.C, can be produced to an industrial advantage and in a high yield. This polymer, which is living at its end, enables synthesis of block copolymers with other polymers, introduction of a functional group to its end, and synthesis of macromonomers.
