Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable the operation control which improves the output of an engine, reduces the fuel cost thereof and decreases the amt. of the NOx to be generated by providing an oxygen sensor having an oxidizing catalyst layer and an oxygen sensor having a ternary catalyst layer in a diffusion chamber. CONSTITUTION:The diffusion chamber 13 into which an exhaust gas is introduced through an introducing port 12 is formed on the inside of a solid electrolyte 14 and electrodes 2, 4 consisting of platinum are provided on both sides of the solid electrolyte 14 to the inside and outside of the diffusion chamber 13. Electrodes 6, 9 and 8, 10 consisting of platinum existing on both sides of the solid electrolyte 14 are formed to the diffusion chamber 13 and an atmospheric air introducing hole 11 to constitute the oxygen sensor which detects the oxygen concn. in the diffusion chamber 13 by the electromotive voltage generated between the respective electrodes. The porous oxidizing catalyst layer 5 is coated on the electrode 6 and the porous ternary catalyst layer 7 having a reduction effect to NOx is coated on the electrode 8. Positive and negative pumping currents are supplied to a pump section 1 in such a manner that the outputs of the respective oxygen sensors attain the specified reference values. An air-fuel ratio and the content of the NOx in the exhaust gas are calculated by a computing means according to these pumping current values.
