Ethanesulphobetaine compounds of the formula <IMAGE> (R<1> = C1-C20-alkyl, R<2> = H, C1-C20-alkyl, A = tert-amine) are prepared by reacting an olefin R<1>-CH=CH2 with AH in solvents containing SO3 in a one-pot reaction at +20 to -78 DEG C.
