Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce superior effects on high-speed intermittent cutting and continuous cutting, by forming a film of a specific compound on the surface of a hard alloy by a CVD method and successively coating the above with a film by a PVD method. CONSTITUTION:A film consisting of one or more kinds selected from the carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides, and boron nitrides of the group-IVa, -Va, -VIa metals and Al2O3 is formed on the surface of a hard alloy, such as sintered hard alloy and cermet, by a CVD method to 0.10-3mum thickness. Further, the surface of this film is coated with a film consisting of one or more compounds selected from the carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides of the group- IVa, -Va, and -VIa metals by a PVD method to 0.5-10mum thickness. Since this coated hard alloy has superior peeling resistance, breaking resistance, and wear resistance, it can produce excellent effects as a material for high-speed milling cutter, etc.
