Abstract

PURPOSE:To introduce carboxyl group into the o- or p-position, by reacting substituted phenols with an alkaline metal hydroxide using sulfolane as a series of reaction solvents, dehydrating the resultant compound and reacting the dehydration product with CO2. CONSTITUTION:Substituted phenols are reacted with an alkaline metal hydroxide, e.g. NaOH, in a ternary mixed solvent of water, an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, such as toluene, and sulfolane to form alkaline metal salts of the substituted phenols, which are then dehydrated while azeotropically distilling the mixture of water with the aromatic hydrocarbon, such as toluene. A solution of the alkaline metal salts of the substituted phenols in sulfolane and CO2 gas are subjected to gas-liquid reaction under ordinary or higher pressure and carboxylated to recover the sulfolane solvent from the reaction product by vacuum distillation, etc. After recovering the sulfolane solvent, water is subsequently added and dissolved in the reaction product and crystallization is carried out by adding a mineral acid to afford the aimed aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid by solid-liquid separation, etc.
