Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable a tool rest or a spindle of being positioned highly positioned and fed at fine rate by using a ultra magnetic strain materials such as TB1-x, Dyx and Fen as those of an actuator to provide higher output and greater displacement than a PZT (PbZrO3-PbTiO3). CONSTITUTION:The ultra magnetic strain material 1 is composed of single crystalline substance or polycrystalline substance of alloy system, such as Tb1-x, Dyx and Fen wherein 1-x, x and n indicated in atomic weight % are in the ranges of 0.15 to 0.4, 0.6 to 0.85 and 1.85 to 2.1, respectively. The material 1 is formed cylindrically and contains a magneto-strain output shaft 2, which is subjected to a certain preload at one end by a spring-loaded nut 4 having a strain gauge 3 to fasten the material 1 and joined with a displacement cancelling member 5 at the other end. An actuator of a ultra magnetic strain member is placed on the tool rest, that is, the transfer table of a machine tool and a cutting or grinding tool is mounted on a tool post to provide the tool with a displacement ranging from several nm to several hundreds mum. If larger displacement is required, the table 9 is moved.
