Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a substitute fiber for asbestos fibers without any health disturbance by bonding milled fibers, short fibers, a balloonlike material, a flaky material and/or a powdery material to the surface of an inorganic or an organic fiber and forming unevennesses on the surface of the fiber. CONSTITUTION: This substitute fiber for asbestos is obtained by bonding milled fibers such as glass, carbon or rock wool or short fibers such as sepiolite or xonotlite, a balloonlike material such as a fly ash or a silas (pumiceous sand) balloon, a flaky material such as mica or graphite and/or a powdery material such as clay or talc to the surface of an inorganic fiber such as a glass fiber, a carbon fiber or a metallic fiber or an organic fiber such as an acrylic fiber, a polyester-based fiber or an armid-based fiber, forming unevennesses on the surface of the fiber and approaching the shape thereof to that of an asbestos fiber. The resultant fiber has characteristics equal to or better than those of the asbestos fiber without health disturbance.
