Abstract

PURPOSE: To make accurate registration possible by performing image forming process on the same optical axis by constituting a rear projection type display device of three liquid crystal light valves for image-forming, a dichroic optical system and a mono light source, a mono projection lens and a transmissive screen. CONSTITUTION: Light emitted from the first light source 7 of the projection unit of the rear projection type display device is made incident on the dichroic mirror 8 combined in a cruciform state and of red and blue reflections, and is resolved into the three colors of red, green and blue. The two kinds of the light of the respective colors of red and blue resolved are respectively reflected twice by reflection mirrors 9a, 9b, 9c and 9d and are image-modulated through the liquid crystal light valve 10R and 10B and are made incident on a dichroic prism 11. Green light passing the mirror 8 is image-modulated by the valve 10G and is supplied to the prism 11. Then, an image is constituted on the same optical axis of the prism 11, and is magnified and projected by a projection lens 12, so that the image is projected on the transmissive screen 13.
