Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled copolymer retaining mechanical properties inherent in aromatic polycarbonate, capable of giving optical discs of low birefringence due to small photoelasticity constant, by making a carbonate linkage among each specific three kinds of compound in specific proportion. CONSTITUTION:A copolymerization is carried out between (A) 10-80mol% of 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxy-3-tert.-butyl-phenyl) propane, (B) 20-80mol% of 1,1'-bis-(4- hydroxyphenyl)-para-diisopropylbenzene, and (C) 1-30mol% of 2,2-bis-(4- hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)-propane so as to total 100mol% to effect polycarbonate linkage among these three components, thus obtaining the objective copolymer with a glass transition temperature of >=125 deg.C and photoelasticity constant of <=60 Brewsters, 10<-12>m<2>/N.
