Abstract

PURPOSE:To readily obtain a bisphenol mixture showing a low melting point, slightly crystallizing, having excellent oil solubility, by condensing through dehydration plural phenols with a carbonyl compound in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Two or three kinds of compounds shown by formula I (X1-X3 are H, halogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, aryl or OH) are a compound shown by formula II (R1 and R2 are H, alkyl, aralkyl or aryl) in the molar ratio of 3-5:1 in the presence of an acid catalyst (e.g. hydrogen chloride or hydrochloric acid) and a reaction promoter (e.g. beta-thiopropionic acid) at 20-50 deg.C to give a bisphenol mixture useful as a raw material for polycarbonate hydrocarbon and epoxy hydrocarbon and a developer for pressure-sensitive paper and heat- sensitive paper. The mixture is preferably a mixture of three kinds of compounds shown by formula III. The amounts of the phenols used are 30-60wt.% based on one kind of the phenols.
