Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled fiber in high yield at a low cost, by heating a raw material powder blend of rutile sand with an oxygen-containing potassium compound to a firing reaction temperature by specific two-stage heating, annealing and opening the resultant fibers after completing the firing reaction. CONSTITUTION:For example, rutile sand powder of 93-99% purity and 400 mesh undersize particle diameter is blended with an oxygen-containing potassium compound, such as K2CO3, at a blending ratio so as to provide 2.5-3.5 molar ratio of TiO2/K2O. The resultant raw material powder blend of 400 mesh undersize particle diameter, as necessary, is shaped into pellets of a suitable size and heated at a temperature (900-920 deg.C in the case of K2CO3) above the melting point of the above-mentioned oxygen-containing potassium compound. In this stage, heating is once stopped and the blend is kept at this temperature for 10-30min, then heated to a firing reaction starting temperature (e.g. about 950 deg.C) in two stages and subjected to firing reaction at 950-1,200 deg.C for 15-60min. After completing the firing reaction, the reaction product is annealed at 10-50 deg.C/hr cooling rate and the resultant fibers are opened.
