Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a large-sized and high-quality diamond in a high yield by placing beforehand a metal plate for controlling development of diamond nuclei between graphite or easily-graphitizable carbon and a medium metal alloy, thereby to convert it into diamond. CONSTITUTION:A metal plate 3 (e.g., a metal composed of a single element such as Co etc. or an alloy such as Fe-Cr etc.) for controlling development of diamond nuclei is placed beforehand between graphite or easily-graphitizable carbon 1 and a medium metal alloy 2, thereby to convert it into diamond. That is, the carbonaceous substance 1 and the medium metal 2 are superimposed on each other in an electrically- and thermally-insulating cylindrical chamber 5 made of ceramic so as to form a multilayer arrangement with the nuclei-controlling metal 3 intervening between two adjacent layers. Further, a carbonaceous electrical conductor 4, a copper plate 7, an electricity-applying ring 8 and a ceramic disc 6 are positioned in the cylindrical chamber 5. This reaction vessel thus charged is set in a high pressure-generating apparatus and reaction is allowed to take place at a pressure and temperature within a stable region, thereby converting it into large-sized and high-quality diamonds. Moreover, it is preferable that the thickness of the layer of the metal plate 3 for controlling development of nuclei be 10-30% of the thickness of the medium metal 2.
