Abstract

PURPOSE:To present a miniaturized optical head device for a magneto-optical disk at low cost by using a wedged prism consisting of a convergent lens and an aeolotropic crystal and a two-division type photodetector for a second optical system which separates reflected light from a recording medium and conducts it to a photodetector. CONSTITUTION:Outgoing light from a semiconductor laser 1 is formed as a minute spot through two beam splitters 3 onto a recording medium 5. A part of the reflected light from the recording medium 5 is divided at a beam splitter 3, and conducted to the optical system for detecting polarization rotation. In this optical system, first, a polarization surface is rotated by 45 deg. by a 1/2 wavelength plate 6, P and S polarization components are separated by a wedged prism 7, and they are converged into the different light receiving surfaces of a two-division type photodetector 9 respectively by a convergent lens 8. Since the wedged prism 7 is formed with the aeolotropic crystal, an outgoing reflective angle can be differentiated by the P and S polarization components in the incoming light.
