PURPOSE:To satisfactorily estimate an original half tone image from an original binary image by having a concentration pattern discriminating circuit and an aperture deciding circuit to determine only one scanning aperture from the output of a conditional expression deciding circuit and calculating the half tone level of an observed picture element based on the number of white or black picture elements in the determined scanning aperture. CONSTITUTION:In a first selection circuit 21, binary data to correspond to respective lines are successively selected to nine line memories L1-L9 and stored. In a second select circuit 23, among the nine line memories, the eight line memories necessary for a present image processing are selected and the respective binary data are supplied to a half tone image estimating part 30. Then, among the scanning apertures of plural types, the only one scanning aperture is selected. Data showing the selected scanning aperture is supplied to a selecting circuit 24 and the value of the half tone image, which is determined by a picture element level in the scanning aperture and a gain, is estimated.
