Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled treating agent capable of giving high-quality pitch-based carbon fiber through improving fiber handleability and preventing mutual fiber fusion etc., by emulsifying into water a silicone oil of specific viscosity using a surfactant having specific thermal properties. CONSTITUTION:(A) A silicone oil with a viscosity of 2-20cst at 25 deg.C is emulsified into water using (B) a surfactant with the residue on heating at 300 deg.C being <=5wt.%, giving no exothermic peak in the differential exothermic curve (DTA) ranging from 30 deg.C to 350 deg.C to obtain the objective treating agent with the component A emulsified in water. The component A is e.g. methylphenylpolysiloxane. The component B is e.g. diethanolamine laurate. The amount of the component B to be used is pref. such as to be 1-20wt.% based on the component A.
