Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound having uniform polymerization degree distribution and low polymerization degree, by supplying a mercaptan to a multi-stage continuous polymerization apparatus under specific condition. CONSTITUTION:A multi-stage continuous polymerization apparatus used in the present process is composed of n reactiors (n>=2). A mercaptan is continuously supplied to the reactors from the 1st reactor to the (n-1)-th reactor according to the formula ([X] is molar concentration of the mercaptan; x is rate of polymerization; Cx is chain-transfer constant to mercaptan; m is m-th reactor; 0[X]m is molar concentration of mercaptan supplied to the m-th reactor based on the total amount of vinyl acetate and methanol supplied to the 1st reactor; [X]m is molar concentration of mercaptan in the m-th reactor; 1<=m<=n-1; when m=1, Xm-1=x0=0 and [X]m-1=[X]0=0). The polymerization is continued without supplying additional mercaptan to the n-th reactor to obtain a low- polymerization degree polyvinyl acetate, which is saponified to provide a polyvinyl alcohol having low polymerization degree.
