Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an antifouling agent effective in suppressing the adhesion of fouling life such as algae, sea-squirt or moss worm without giving undesirable effect to the growth of cultured shellfishes such as oyster, scallop or pearl oyster, by using a benzimidazole compound as an active component. CONSTITUTION:A benzimidazole compound, especially 2-methoxycarbonylamino- benzimidazole or 2-(4-thiazolyl)-benzimidazole is used as an active component of the objective agent. The compound is dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous solution or emulsion, etc., of various binders and optionally mixed with additives such as various pigments. The mixture is applied to the surface of cultured shellfish or the shellfish is immersed in the mixture and the treated shellfish is returned into sea water. The medium is preferably water or ethanol. The amounts of the imidazole compound and the binder in the antifouling agent are preferably 0.5-50wt.% and 50-99.5wt%, respectively.
