Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a halogen-substituted aromatic compound, by hydrolyzing a halogen-substituted benzenecarbonitrile to give the titled substance and heat- treating the titled substance in a nitrogen-containing organic base which neither contains hydrogen directly bonded to nitrogen nor has heterocyclic aromatic properties. CONSTITUTION:A compound shown by formula I (n is 1 or 2; X is F, Cl, Br or H) is heat-treated in an organic base which neither contains hydrogen directly bonded to nitrogen nor has heterocyclic aromatic properties in a mixture of the base and a nonpolar organic solvent to give a halogen-substituted aromatic compound useful as an intermediate raw material for drugs, agricultural chemicals, photosensitive material and functional polymers in high yield and in high purities. A tertiary amine, diamine or amidine is preferable as the nitrogen-containing organic base. The compound shown by formula I is formed by hydrolyzing a compound shown by formula II in an aqueous solution of an inorganic acid, the isolation process may be abbreviated and an extracted solution of the carboxylic acid may be directly heat-treated.
