Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a positional discriminating mark from a data surface by using an illegal pattern for a sector mark and an index mark. CONSTITUTION:A servo sector 1 provided in a track on a rotational recording medium is constitutive of a gap area or a sink area 3, the sector mark or the index mark 4, a gap area 5 and servo data 6 and 7, etc. Now, the mark 4 indicates a starting position of each sector or a rotational position of the recording medium, whereas the illegal pattern is used for 2-7RLL code. By this method, the mark 4 can directly be obtained from the data surface. In addition, since the servo data can be obtained from the data surface, it is not necessary to provide a servo surface for exclusive use, thus lowering the cost of the device.
