Abstract

PURPOSE:To decrease the identification errors by selecting and outputting one of two types of binarization data obtained by a quantizing means and a dither transformation means. CONSTITUTION:An identifying means 40 identifies based on the gradation change and the number of picture elements of each quantization level whether an i-th picture block belongs to a character/line picture area or a gradation picture area. The result of this identification is sent to a selection/output means 60. The picture elements of the i-th picture block are binarized by a dither transformation means 50 and these binarized signals are sent to the means 60. At the same time, the picture elements of the i-th picture block are binarized by the threshold value of a quantizing means 20 and these binarized signals are also sent to the means 60. The means 60 outputs the binarized signals from the means 20 when the result of identification given from the means 40 shows the character/line picture area. While the means 60 delivers the binarized signals from the means 50 in case the result of identification shows the gradation area.
