Abstract

PURPOSE:To accurately and securely detect the three-dimensional position of a body whose image is to be picked up by forming a mask window for the feature part of images obtained by picking up the object body in two directions and further forming another mask window which shifts from it by parallax. CONSTITUTION:A couple of right and left pieces of original image information on movement environment which are picked up by two cameras and inputted to a stereoscopic image input part 3 and one of them, e.g. left image information is supplied to a feature edge extraction part 5 to extract a featured edge part, which is supplied to a mask generation part 7. The generation part 7 generates a left mask window and the left original image corresponding to it is stored as a left window memory. This left original image is supplied to a similar index calculation and decision making part 9 to generate a right mask window shifting from the left window memory by the parallax, and a right original image corresponding to the right mask window is stored in a right window memory. Thus, the similar index value between the images in the right and left window memories is calculated, it is decided from the index value whether or not there is a body such as an obstacle, and obstacle presence/absence information is outputted as shown by an arrow 11.
