Abstract

PURPOSE:To directly check correspondence between an unknown word and an original sentence and to easily decide the part of speech of the unknown word by displaying an unknown word detected from an inputted original sentence distinguishably from other words in an output original sentence. CONSTITUTION:The translation processing of an inputted original sentence is executed by a translation program 31, the obtained translated sentence is stored in a translated sentence memory 42 and displayed on the screen of a display device 60 in parallel with the original sentence. The program 31 retrieves the information of words in the original sentence from a translation dictionary 71 during the execution of translation, and when an unregistered word appears in the original sentence, the translated sentence is formed by using the original word of the word, i.e. an unknown word, as it is and its positional information is set up in an unknown information memory 43. When an unknown word display key on a keyboard 10 is depressed after ending the translation, the program 31 switches the display of the unknown word in the original sentence outputted on the screen to inverted display based on the unknown word position information set up in the memory 43. Consequently, correspondence between the unknown word and the original sentence can be directly checked and the part of speech of the unknown word can be easily confirmed.
